Shelter the Homeless is proud to announce a $10 million contribution from Gail Miller and the Larry H. & Gail Miller Family Foundation to support the launch of a new capital campaign, the Sustainability and Enhancement Fund.
This transformational gift will strengthen Shelter the Homeless’ ability to maintain and enhance its programs, improve security, expand support services, and ensure long-term stability for individuals and families experiencing homelessness in Salt Lake County.
“The Homeless Resource Centers are among the most effective tools to help individuals and families move out of crisis,” said Josh Romney, president and chair of the Shelter the Homeless board. “This generous matching gift will provide essential capital funding to ensure the centers, which provide over 90% of the shelter beds in Salt Lake County, remain places of dignity that are safe and well-maintained for many years to come.”
At an event on December 11 at the Gail Miller Resource Center, members of the Miller family, Miller Family Foundation representatives, Shelter the Homeless staff and government officials gathered to share the news and discuss the meaningful impact this contribution will have on the surrounding community. The announcement marks an important step in advancing the nonprofit’s mission to promote safety, dignity, and pathways to stability for those most in need.
“My family and I are proud to support Shelter the Homeless and initiatives like this,” said Gail Miller, chair of the Larry H. & Gail Miller Family Foundation and co-founder of the Larry H. Miller Company. “Access to vital resources, like those provided by Shelter the Homeless, is essential in helping individuals and families navigate challenging circumstances and work toward stability.”
This anchor gift from Gail Miller and the Miller Family Foundation underscores their ongoing commitment to Utah’s Homeless Resource Centers. The donation strengthens the Sustainability & Enhancement Fund, providing Shelter the Homeless with the resources to expand services, maintain safe and supportive housing, and implement innovative programs that directly improve the lives of individuals and families experiencing homelessness. Addressing both immediate needs and long-term solutions, the gift helps the organization continue building a stronger, more resilient, and empowered community.
“This investment strengthens the network of services for individuals and families experiencing homelessness,” said Rep. Tyler Clancy, who will serve as the state’s homeless coordinator beginning in March 2026. “Homeless Resource Centers ensure people are treated with dignity while gaining the tools to move toward stability and independence and this gift, directed to the Gail Miller Resource Center, will help our friends and neighbors, and the surrounding community, feel safe, respected and supported.”
In addition to supporting long-term programs, the funds will help enhance the Gail Miller Resource Center through security upgrades, expanded food assistance, and key internal and external facility improvements. Located in Salt Lake City’s Ballpark Neighborhood, the center has served as a vital gateway since opening in 2019, helping individuals and families begin their next chapter. This contribution reflects the Miller family’s continued commitment to strengthening the surrounding Ballpark Neighborhood through ongoing enhancement funding and future community-focused investments in the area.
“This contribution will directly support our friends and neighbors experiencing homelessness, ensuring they have access to the resources, care, and safe spaces they need,” said Mayor Erin Mendenhall. “With another cold winter approaching, funding for these efforts is more important than ever. We are grateful for Gail’s continued investment in the Ballpark Neighborhood.”
