Gail Miller Receives Prestigious Horizon Award at U.S. Capitol Ceremony

Sandy, UTAH (June 21, 2019) – The Congressional Award Foundation honored Gail Miller, Larry H. Miller Group of Companies owner and chairman, with its Horizon Award on Thursday. The Joint Leadership Commission of the foundation and its Board of Directors recognized Miller for her contributions to her community, youth, education, and improved health.

During the annual ceremony at the U.S. Capitol, Senator Mitt Romney presented Miller with the award saying, “Gail is not only a pillar in our community, she is an example who serves with grace, and with commitment, and with personal strength.”
Miller encouraged Gold Medal recipients in attendance to identify the skills they learned from their Congressional Award journey and apply them throughout their lives.

“While you’ve been working to complete the requirements to earn this award, you have also been developing many character-building qualities in areas of public service, personal development, physical fitness and expedition/exploration,” said Miller. “These experiences that you’ve had, coupled with your hard work, will serve you well for the rest of your life. The work you have done has provided you with opportunities to shape your own actions and determine your purpose in life.”
She also called upon attendees to demonstrate decency in society.

“We need to lead by example and insist that respect, courtesy and civility are at the top of our consciousness, no matter the issue, or the event,” Miller said. “By working together, we can eradicate bullying, discrimination and hate, unsportsmanlike conduct, and intolerance. We all need to stand up and speak up! You are the leaders of tomorrow. We are counting on your innovative ideas, your energy, your compassion and your courage to build a strong world.”

The Horizon Award recognizes individuals from the private sector who “have worked to expand opportunities for all Americans through their own personal contributions.”

“Gail embodies the spirit of this award by demonstrating thought for others in her decision-making and using her influence to shape communities for the better,” said Paxton K. Baker, chairman of The Congressional Award National Board of Directors. “Gail’s story is about finding true individuality, and her life’s work serves as an extraordinary example for our nation’s youth, particularly young women.”

Previous Horizon Award recipients include Drew Brees, America Ferrera, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Bob Lanier, Wynton Marsalis, Cal Ripken, Jr., Pat and Emmitt Smith, and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
